Each of the twelve notes has its own group of seven notes that together make up a particular key or scale. The Major Scale is the foundation for all of the other scales, as they are simply a variation of the major scale.
For the Major Scale, you start on the Keynote (name of key), then you go up one whole step, another whole step, a half step, then the next three are each one whole step apart.
